17 Aug WHO ARE YOU? THE STORY TEAM
Today, STORIES play a critical role in every aspect of our lives, from professional and business STORIES to our personal ones. The I-Theater framework, is purposely designed to help us integrate the BACK STAGE, FRONT STAGE and FUTURE STAGE dimensions of a STORY, while also focusing on the tradeoffs and patterns that are part of the accelerating speed of change that is consistently modifying and shaping stories.
From the INNERTAINMENT perspective, when we focus on our PERSONAL STORY with the goal of self development in mind, we can view our personality as three separate and integrated dimensions… our STORY TEAM. These include our INNER ACTORS, our INNER DIRECTOR and our INNER PRODUCER. This approach provides a necessary “reality check” on how and why our PERSONAL STORY is critical to our future, but often times involves layers of complexity that make it difficult to organize and communicate our STORY in ways that support our future development.
STORY TEAM DIMENSION #1: OUR INNER ACTORS
Our INNER ACTORS are the mostly unconscious and automatic “person parts” that make up our whole personality. When you pay attention to a celebrity, sports figure, political figure, friend, colleague, or the main characters in a film, there are certain qualities or personality “parts” that stand out, and our more recognizable and compelling qualities or attributes. These INNER ACTORS of the individual can be positive or negative, subtle, bold, humorous, toxic, charismatic, flamboyant, cheerful, exciting, obnoxious, etc. etc. etc. They can be defined as the core qualities of the individual, the qualities or characteristics that you recognize and that play a major role in their personality that is communicated to others.
When we’re developing our personal STORY, it’s to our advantage to understand our own INNER ACTORS, and become more aware of what and how we are communicating our individual differences to the Circles of Influence that surround us. The part, role, and script of our INNER ACTORS is critical to our future happiness, fulfillment, and success, because our INNER ACTORS become our presentation to others. The more we can understand them, the better is our developmental potential for the future. The INNERTAINMENT method embraces the broad range of examples and possibilities that are available for insight and understanding in the entertainment industry as a tool for this understanding. In our current entertainment economy, we have the luxury of understanding the characters we see in films, and using this awareness as a gateway to the development of our own personal INNER ACTORS.
STORY TEAM DIMENSION#2: OUR INNER DIRECTOR
While the DIRECTOR of a film is responsible for a broad variety of elements resulting in the creative development of a STORY and it’s film portrayal, our personal INNER DIRECTOR is the second member of our STORY TEAM, and plays the role of creating and directing our personal STORY. Unlike the less conscious, automatic INNER ACTORS, the INNER DIRECTOR is the proactive, conscious, creative, problem solving, catalyst behind our self development. Self awareness, ability, control, creative and critical thinking are the cornerstones of our INNER DIRECTOR.
These important skills and processes are developmentally dependent, occur over time, and rely on the higher levels of our brain development that depend upon a wide variety of experiences we encounter in the first 25 years of our life. The unfolding and positive development of our INNER DIRECTOR is not a given or a “slam dunk”, especially in our rapidly changing technological and media driven culture. Current research indicates a decline in our INNER DIRECTOR potentials for many individuals, as evidenced in the rising rate of suicide, learned helplessness, anxiety, depression and mental health issues.
STORY TEAM DIMENSION #3: OUR INNER PRODUCER
The third STORY TEAM member is our INNER PRODUCER. The role the PRODUCER plays in the making of a film, is to oversee the ACTORS and the DIRECTOR in all aspects of the film project with the goal of completion, visibility, and success in mind. Like the PRODUCER of a film, our INNER PRODUCER plays the role of implementation, maintenance and applied personal STORY success in our life journey. In order to fulfill its role, the INNER PRODUCER, like the INNER DIRECTOR, must use a combination of high level developmental skills for prioritizing, planning, organization, flexible thinking, critical thinking, problem solving, and self management.
When we begin to understand the STORY TEAM dimensions, it becomes clear that our future success and personal STORY development is dependent on the integration of all three dimensions…our INNER ACTORS, INNER DIRECTOR and INNER PRODUCER. The INNERTAINMENT method builds upon this perspective, in order to use the lessons of entertainment as a foundation to understand our human potential. In summary, our personal STORY is dependent on the integration of our INNER ACTORS (person parts), INNER DIRECTOR (preparation process) and INNER PRODUCER (personal presentation).
FROM AN INNERTAINMENT PERSPECTIVE, SUCCESS, HAPPINESS AND FULFILLMENT DEPEND UPON THE AWARENESS AND INTEGRATION OF THE STORY TEAM…OUR INNER ACTOR, INNER DIRECTOR AND INNER PRODUCER.
